Join this free online course to learn from members of the European Union’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence as well as SAP’s own experts about how to create trustworthy and ethical artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly present in our daily lives. This new technology presents us with many opportunities and much to consider. Creating trustworthy and ethical artificial intelligence requires an understanding not only of the technology itself, but also the societal and ethical conditions present, and how to appropriately account for and assess their impact on the way AI is designed, built, and tested, and the way we interact with it.
This course explains the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI created by the European Union’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence, with insights from members of the group as well as experts from SAP. Each of them will share their own insights, examples, and areas of particular interest when it comes to artificial intelligence.
Our first section will cover the foundations of trustworthy AI, with an overview of both the challenges and the opportunities that AI presents us with. We’ll take a critical look at how to best balance these two sides of the equation, especially as AI is still an emerging technology when it comes to our current level of understanding.
Section 2 will explore the key concepts that are essential to having a holistic view of trustworthy and ethical AI, including several examples of AI in the real world and the points of conflict or opportunity that could arise.
Finally, in section 3, we’ll bring all these concepts together and provide actionable steps, both technical and non-technical, as well as examples of how you can take what you’ve learned with you after the course. As this course has been designed for anyone who works with or uses artificial intelligence, we’ve tried to focus on the central concepts key to understanding and thinking critically about AI ethics in a way that is very approachable. It is our goal to have something that is understandable and immediately usable for any leader, owner, developer, or user of artificial intelligence technologies.

Dr. Markus Noga is head of SAP Leonardo Machine Learning, where he leads teams building machine learning, conversational AI, intelligent robotic process automation, and data intelligence capabilities for the SAP portfolio of products.
Prior to this, Markus was VP for New Business & Portfolio, where he drove the launch of SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud and the continuous renewal of SAP’s global R&D portfolio. He has also worked as a director in the Corporate Strategy Group.
Before joining SAP, Markus was a principal with management consultancy Booz & Company. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from University of Karlsruhe, where he focused on the optimization of document processing.
Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl is director general of DIGITALEUROPE, the leading association for the digital technology industry in Europe. Prior to this, she was an executive board member and member of the high-level Digital Advisory Council of DIGITALEUROPE.
Cecilia has served as a board member for the Danish Chamber of Commerce and was chairman of the board of the Danish ICT association (ITB), where she developed policy positions on the digitalization of business, ICT security, disruptive business models, telecoms, and education. She has held international positions at IBM and Oracle, as well as building SME businesses across Europe and China. Cecilia has more than 20 years of experience in the ICT industry.
Mathias Cellarius has been SAP’s group data protection officer and head of Data Protection and Privacy since 2014. Since October 2017, he has taken on the additional role of head of SAP Export Control.
Mathias joined SAP in 2005 and, prior to leading Data Protection and Privacy, worked as a lawyer in various roles in SAP Global Legal. He studied law at the University of Freiburg and holds an Executive MBA from the Mannheim Business School.
Klaus Höckner is a member of the board of the Austrian Association Supporting the Blind and Visually Impaired (Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen Österreichs) based in Vienna. With more than 4,400 members, it is the leading organization representing and helping visually impaired people in Austria. Klaus is also member of the board of the Austrian Disability Forum, an umbrella organization for Austrian organizations working in the field of disability, and vice-president of the Austrian Computer Society.
Klaus studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and has a degree in web accessibility and fundraising. He is a member in the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) and is Certified Web Accessibility Expert (CWAE), a certificate issued in Austria by Incite. He is a member of the organizing board of m-enabling.
Dr. Leo Kärkkäinen is a Bell Labs Fellow and leader of the Deep Learning Research Group at Nokia Bell Labs. He is also a part-time professor of embedded systems in biomechanical technologies at Aalto University. In addition, Leo is also a co-chief AI officer of Nokia. He has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from University of Helsinki.
Mary Carol Madigan is a senior strategist for machine learning at SAP, where she helps define how SAP leverages artificial intelligence to build the Intelligent Enterprise. Mary Carol also focuses on implementing AI ethics at SAP as well as other strategic topics key to the success of innovation.
Prior to joining SAP, Mary Carol worked in new product development for UnitedHealth Group, where she focused on launching new healthcare services. She received her MBA from the University of Notre Dame and has a degree in Political Science from College of the Holy Cross.
Dr. Christoph Peylo is global head of Bosch Centre for Artificial Intelligence (BCAI) with locations in Sunnyvale, Bangalore, and Renningen. Prior to joining Robert Bosch GmbH in 2017, he was VP at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories in Berlin, where he worked in the area of AI, (cyber) security, Industrie 4.0, and IoT.
Before joining Deutsche Telekom in 2006, Christoph worked in various positions from software engineer to managing director of a software company. He studied computer science, computational linguistics, and artificial intelligence, and acquired his Ph.D. in the field of AI at the University of Osnabrück.
As SAP’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Daniel Schmid has been responsible for sustainability at SAP SE globally since 2014.
He started his career in IT consulting and held various senior management positions within SAP Consulting before joining the sustainability leadership team, established in 2009, to start SAP’s sustainability journey and lead the Sustainability Operations team.
Daniel holds a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He is a member of the steering committee of econsense, a forum for the sustainable development of German business.
