New @ openSAP: The Power of Employee Volunteering and Software Design for Non-Designers

Dear openSAP Community,

At this time of year it’s common to start setting both personal and professionals goals for the year ahead. We’ve got two new courses to help those of you that want to start volunteering or want to learn more about software design.

Empathy in Motion: The Power of Employee Volunteering
We’ve teamed up with the Realized Worth Institute to deliver a course aimed at those interested in getting involved in corporate volunteering. When employees volunteer with organizations or causes in need, the opportunity arises to be reminded of what it means to be human, opening up new perspectives and experiences. For companies with established volunteering processes and structures, it can be difficult to come up with new and innovative ideas to motivate employees to take part and to keep them interested in volunteerism. For small or new companies, it can be difficult to put a framework together and begin organizing and driving volunteering initiatives amongst employees. Empathy in Motion: The Power of Employee Volunteering guides learners through both of these scenarios and more. The course starts from March 14 and enrollment is now open!

Software Design for Non-Designers
This popular course is returning to openSAP from March 15. The course aims to teach developers to embrace design as part of their everyday work, even if they haven’t spent years studying design. In just six weeks, you can improve your design skills when developing software. Learn from Scott Klemmer, Professor of Design at Stanford and design experts from SAP, including Sam Yen, SAP’s Chief Design Officer. Get actively involved and complete hands-on exercises, providing you with the skills you need to apply simple and user-friendly design practices when developing software. Learn to develop with design in mind, allowing your end users to focus on their job, not on your software. Enrollment is now open!

If you’re a German speaker, you might be interested in joining the course, Web-Technologien, over on our partner’s site, openHPI. The course starts from February 6 and will be delivered in German language.

Don’t forget that we have many other topics now open and upcoming at openSAP including SAP S/4HANA with SAP HANA Cloud Platform, SAP S/4HANA, Data Science, SAP HANA Cloud Platform, SAP Screen Personas, SAP Business ByDesign Financials, and SAP BusinessObjects Roambi.
For those interested in further design topics, check out our other design courses and our openSAP Thought Leaders course starts February 14, The Future of Genomics and Precision Medicine.

If you’ve missed any of our previous courses, you can now earn a Record of Achievement in self-paced mode with our reactivation option.

See you soon on openSAP!

Learn the Basics of Design Research

Dear openSAP community,

Design is becoming increasingly important in the development process for products and services across all industries, not just in IT. To meet end-user expectations and deliver the ideal user experience, design research is a critical pre-project task. If you missed Basics of Design Research on openSAP in 2016, then sign up to the next run of the course in January 2017!

The purpose of design research is to create an empathy for your end-users and to uncover users’ needs – some they are aware of, but some are subconscious needs. In this course, learners will get an introduction to the role of design research in your planning and execution of software design. The course will explain the benefits of a field visit, observing your end-users in their natural habitat, as well as looking at the tools and key roles involved in the design research process. Learners will also have the opportunity to take part in a research challenge.

Here is just a small selection of the feedback received during the 2016 run:

What I liked about this course was that it required propeller heads like me to think about design in a different way to what we are used to. Probably my worst ever grade for an openSAP course, but I don't mind that, it just shows that it's tricky to change your Weltanschauung "just like that", and even trying to do so helps you learn new things and ways of working.
Click to view online (login required)

I have to talk to users every day for supporting them in case of any issues in SAP system, and also need to collaborate with users for gathering requirements in order to deliver what they need. This course is very much focused into that area, hence I took up this course and I really enjoyed it. In future, I am sure I will apply the techniques mentioned in this course when I am given ownership to develop any solution.

I really enjoyed the Course contents and lay out. It was really simplified that drives away fear of taking responsibilities away. It really opens one's eye as a person planning to take up jobs that requires you working with releasing of a final products. Am blessed by this course.

New topics at openSAP: Enterprise Machine Learning, Extending SAP S/4HANA, and Extended Supply Chain

Dear openSAP community,

At openSAP, we’re committed to delivering free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to help everyone interested in SAP’s latest innovations to understand topics they would like to learn about. The latest courses open for enrollment include Enterprise Machine Learning in a Nutshell, Digital Transformation Across the Extended Supply Chain (Repeat), and Extending SAP S/4HANA with SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

Enterprise Machine Learning in a Nutshell
The objective of this course is to help business decision makers understand the significance of machine learning for enterprise computing. After taking this course, participants should be aware of recent advances in machine learning, have an understanding of the basic concepts involved and how business problems can be solved with machine learning. In particular, how to get from a business problem to a machine learning solution. Enterprise Machine Learning in a Nutshell starts from November 14 and takes just 2-3 hours to complete.

Extending SAP S/4HANA with SAP HANA Cloud Platform
SAP S/4HANA Customers and Partners can build extensions with SAP HANA Cloud Platform, as well as add new capabilities and delivery methods to tablets and smartphones. After an initial introduction to typical scenarios and architectures, you’ll work on extension development projects on SAP HANA Cloud Platform, such as integration with cloud connector and OData provisioning, integration with real back-end data using replication, OData APIs, and remote function modules, improve user experience, and much more. Extending SAP S/4HANA with SAP HANA Cloud Platform starts from January 11 and runs over a six week period.

Digital Transformation Across the Extended Supply Chain (Repeat)
This course was originally delivered earlier in 2016. If you haven’t already joined and would like to learn about the four main elements affecting the supply chain, sign up and discuss topics with experts and peers. You’ll learn about resource scarcity, individualized products, sharing economy, and customer centricity. Based on these elements, you’ll also learn why your business processes and systems need to evolve to remain competitive in the digital economy. The course opens November 2 and you’ll have the chance to earn a Record of Achievement and use the discussion forum until December 8. Digital Transformation Across the Extended Supply Chain (Repeat) will take just 2-3 hours to complete.

We have a range of other topics, including SAP BW/4HANA, SAP Fiori for iOS, IoT, and much more, currently running - don’t forget to check them out!

openSAP Reactivation Codes now available on general release!

Dear openSAP community,

Thank you for your positive reaction to our openSAP reactivation codes, which allow you to reactivate weekly assignments, providing you with an opportunity to earn a Record of Achievement in self-paced mode. Until now, you could only get a reactivation code at SAP TechEd or through our social media challenge. We are happy to announce that from today, you can now purchase a reactivation code at SAP Store at the cost of €39.

So how does it work?

If you’re interested in earning a Record of Achievement in self-paced mode, check the course to see if there is an option to Reactivate for Record of Achievement. If it’s available, you can purchase one openSAP reactivation code at SAP Store for €39 (Bulk discounts also available). Simply enter the reactivation code in the Redeem code box on the course page where you wish to earn a Record of Achievement. You will then have 8 weeks to complete the assignments and final exam. (Check out our blog on the new SAP Community!)

openSAP is not becoming a paid offering - all existing materials and offerings remain completely free of charge. Here’s a simplified guide:

  • What if I complete the weekly assignments and final exam during the scheduled runtime; can I still earn a Record of Achievement without any charges? YES!
  • If I don’t want to earn a Record of Achievement, can I still access the learning content in self-paced mode free of charge? YES!
  • Why is there a charge applied to reactivate a course?
The goal of MOOCs at openSAP is to encourage learners to complete the content within a specified timeframe and to benefit from features such as the discussion forum. We want learners to join the scheduled courses and share experiences with others, collaborate, and ask questions as this is the key benefit for learners taking part in MOOCs. If learners can earn a Record of Achievement free of charge at any time, the motivation to deliver courses in MOOC format would be lost; learners would enroll but very few would complete the content and put the knowledge to work. Our aim is to support learners who could not complete the course during the scheduled run time to earn a Record of Achievement, without affecting the experience of a live course.

Important: Remember to check if the course you’re interested in is available for reactivation before you purchase the reactivation code.

With kind regards,
Your openSAP Team

Dear openSAP community,

To continue your learning journey with SAP HANA, we are happy to announce the new SAP HANA Core Knowledge Series. The first course in this series is Text Analytics with SAP HANA Platform.

The key to extracting important information from unstructured and semi-structured textual data is using natural-language processing. Text analytics within SAP HANA is a suite of linguistic, statistical, and machine learning capabilities that model and structure the information content of textual sources in multiple languages. This technology is a strategic asset that forms the foundation for natural-language processing for a range of discovery applications. With SAP HANA, text is a first-class data type.

Demos and optional hands-on exercises will be available in this course, so you can experience text analytics first-hand within SAP HANA. The course begins January 19 and will run over five weeks. Sign up today!

We hope to see you there!

Helmut Krcmar is professor of Information Systems in the Department of Informatics at the Technische Universität München (TUM).

In this course, you’ll learn about the characteristics of digital transformation, how it evolved, and how the organizational and technological changes associated with digital transformation change the role, the skills, and the concept of leadership. This course contains two weeks content but you have until November 4 to complete two weekly assignments and earn a Record of Achievement.

Stay tuned to the openSAP thought leaders series to enable you and your business to successfully complete your digital transformation and find simplicity. Be the disruptor not the disrupted!

New openHPI Course: Web Technologies

Dear openSAP community,

Our friends & partners at openHPI have a new course - Web Technologies - starting today that could be of interest to some of you.

Please see their course description below:

WWW, the world wide web or shortly the Web - really nothing more than an information service on the Internet – has changed our world by creating a whole new digital world that is closely intertwined with our real world, making reality what was previously unimaginable: communication across the world in seconds, watching movies on a smartphone, playing games or looking at photos with remote partners in distant continents, shopping or banking from your couch… In our MOOC we introduce and discuss the underlying web technologies. We start off by introducing the basic technologies of the Web characterized by keywords like URI, HTTP, HTML, CSS and XML. Later we discuss client-side and server-side web programming and have a closer look on JavaScript, web frameworks, libraries and architectural principles. Then we focus on web applications, such as web services and search engines. During the course you are invited also to solve some practical tasks. But don't worry, we will get to that together.

The course starts today, June 1, 2015 and is being held by Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel and his teaching team, consisting of members of the Internet Technologies and Systems department at the Hasso Plattner Institute, University of Potsdam, Germany.

If you would like to take part, please register on openHPI and sign up for the course.
